The possibility of Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle) and Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor) becoming romantically involved on The Young and the Restless has sparked plenty of discussion among fans — and that debate is almost certain to intensify after the unlikely pair came incredibly close to kissing during the Tuesday, August 11 episode.
Why a Victoria and Kyle Romance Would Be So Complicated
There is a huge amount of shared history between Victoria and Kyle that could make any romantic relationship between them extremely messy — and the fact that one is a Newman while the other is an Abbott is only part of the problem.
To begin with, Kyle was born in 2001, at a time when Victoria was already an adult who had three marriages in her past. Years later, she would marry Kyle’s uncle Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) more than once, and Victoria and Billy are parents to two children, Johnny (Paxton Mishkind) and Katie (Sienna Mercuri). At separate moments in their lives, Victoria and Kyle were technically even stepsiblings — first when Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) remarried Kyle’s father, Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman), and later when Victor (Eric Braeden) briefly remarried Kyle’s mother, Diane (Susan Walters).
Kyle also has significant romantic ties to other people in the Newman family. He was once married to Victoria’s niece, Summer Newman (Allison Lanier), and the two are parents to Harrison (Redding Munsell). Even more recently, Kyle was engaged to Victoria’s eldest daughter, Claire (Hayley Erin).
That means Victor would undoubtedly have plenty to say if his daughter started seeing yet another Abbott, but the situation would be far more personal than another chapter in the endless Newman-Abbott rivalry. Kyle wouldn’t simply be dating someone from the Newman family — he would be romantically involved with a woman who has previously been his aunt, his stepsister, and the mother of the woman he once intended to marry.
Y&R Viewers Have Plenty to Say About Victoria and Kyle
Some Y&R fans are surprisingly supportive of the idea of Kyle and Victoria becoming a couple, if only because watching Victor react to his daughter dating another Abbott could be highly entertaining. As @loonacy58 pointed out on X (formerly Twitter), Victor hardly needs another reason to go after the Abbotts, but Kyle getting together with Victoria could provide the perfect excuse to bring their old family feud roaring back to life.
Although some viewers believe Kyle may be deliberately getting close to Victoria as revenge against Victor for his efforts to damage the Abbott family, @lisamarieLML thinks Kyle’s attraction is sincere. She argued on X that Kyle clearly doesn’t appear to be manipulating Victoria simply to hurt Victor, though the relationship would still create enormous chaos and drive Victor crazy — which could ultimately work out very well for Kyle anyway.
Other viewers are especially curious to see how Claire might respond to discovering that her former fiancé is now interested in her mother. Sylvia Sanchez Rocha wrote on the Soap Opera Digest Facebook page that she actually likes the idea because watching Claire completely lose her composure over the situation could be extremely entertaining.
No matter how much dramatic material such a pairing could generate, some fans simply cannot get past the age gap between the two characters. @CashtonTx noted on X that, even by soap-opera standards, it feels strange because longtime viewers remember Kyle when he was still a child while Victoria was already an adult who had known him and his family for years. In real life, the commenter suggested, such a relationship would likely be considered incredibly scandalous.
On the Digest Facebook page, Phyllis Huggins explained that she enjoyed seeing Victoria and Kyle as two people who could confide in and support each other, but felt turning that connection into romance seemed forced simply to keep the Newman-Abbott conflict alive. She also pointed out the unavoidable fact that Kyle was previously engaged to Victoria’s daughter. Meanwhile, over on X, @Reggie045 jokingly suggested that Victoria looks more like someone who should be babysitting Kyle — though the commenter still enthusiastically cheered Kyle on.
Even so, there are viewers who sincerely enjoy the chemistry developing between Kyle and Victoria, although many of them seem to realize their opinion may not be especially popular. @RenaSoferMagic admitted on X that she almost hated how easily she could imagine herself supporting Kyle and Victoria as a couple. And @CrimsonPuppet similarly confessed that, unpopular opinion or not, there is something about Victoria and Kyle together that actually works for them.
