Susan Has a Problem and It’s Not Stefano
There is no denying that Stefano (Joseph Mascolo) has somehow continued to influence his family even from beyond the grave. His presence still seems to hang over nearly all of his children, with Chad (Conner Floyd) perhaps being one of the few who has managed to escape it.
But when it comes to EJ (Dan Feuerriegel), his mother, Susan (Stacy Haiduk), completely misunderstood the real source of the darkness inside him. In the July 29 episode, Susan had a serious conversation with her son after noticing behavior that reminded her strongly of Stefano.
DAYS viewers already know that EJ has inherited plenty of traits from his infamous father. Susan, however, refuses to truly acknowledge that. Instead of focusing on the darkness that already exists inside her living son, she remained fixated on the evil legacy of the late Stefano. It is a familiar pattern for Susan, who often chooses to overlook EJ’s worst behavior and his increasingly villainous decisions.
Why Susan Isn’t Helping EJ In a Positive Way
Susan is his mother, so naturally she does not want to believe the worst about her own child. Still, blaming Stefano, who has been dead for years, only gives EJ another excuse for his actions. It is understandable because many parents struggle to recognize serious flaws in their children, and Susan is certainly no different.
The real problem is that every time she avoids directly confronting EJ, he becomes even more comfortable continuing his questionable behavior. Susan has always followed her own unusual path. She believes strongly in feelings, positive energy, love, and seeing the best in people, but that approach makes it difficult for her to recognize who EJ has actually become.
Regardless of how far EJ goes, Susan refuses to abandon her belief that there is still something good buried somewhere inside him. Unfortunately, that unwavering faith may also be preventing EJ from understanding just how dark his actions have become during the last several years.
Susan could possibly be the one person EJ might genuinely listen to if she finally confronted him honestly about his behavior. Instead, she continues focusing on the good she believes remains inside him, allowing EJ to convince himself that he cannot really be that terrible if his mother continues standing by his side.
EJ desperately needs someone to force him to face reality, and Susan may be the person who needs to do it before there is no turning back. At this point, the possibility of EJ losing his chance at redemption seems closer than ever.
